Be ready for anything: How to gain essential skills for everyday resilience

Equip yourself with the skills to make a life-changing difference in an emergency.

We often think we’re prepared — until the unexpected happens. While Singapore remains one of the safest nations in the world, we live in a time of increasing unpredictability. Emergencies, whether a medical crisis at home or a large-scale incident in public, can arise in an instant. Knowing how to respond can turn a life-altering crisis into a manageable situation.

The importance of readiness is highlighted every Total Defence Day, commemorated on 15 February. This date marks the surrender of British forces in Singapore to the Japanese in 1942 during World War II, serving as a stark reminder of the importance of staying vigilant and prepared.

Fortunately, essential life-saving skills are within reach for everyone and form a key part of Singapore’s Total Defence efforts. By equipping yourself with practical, life-saving techniques, you not only protect your loved ones but also help build a more resilient community. Across Singapore, programmes are available to teach these vital skills in just a short amount of time — a small investment that can have a lasting impact.

BE A LIFESAVER

Emergencies like cardiac arrest or accidents can happen anytime, anywhere — and every second counts. Being equipped with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and basic first aid skills can mean the difference between life and death.

You don’t need prior medical experience to start. Organisations like the Singapore Red Cross Academy and Singapore First Aid Training Centre (SFATC) welcome everyone. HomeTeamNS members can enjoy a 5% discount on all First Aid courses with SFATC.

These lessons teach you proper CPR techniques, how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and how to provide first aid for injuries like cuts and trauma. Beyond knowledge, these skills build your confidence to stay composed during critical moments, enabling you to be the calm, reliable presence others can depend on.

FIRE-PROOF YOUR HOME

Fires caused by personal mobility devices (PMDs) have been a growing concern. Additionally, more than half of the fires recorded in early 2023 were residential, often linked to unattended cooking or electrical faults, with some spreading to neighbouring units.

Thankfully, many of these incidents are preventable with proper knowledge and precautions. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) runs the Responders Plus Programme (RPP), which teaches you how to identify fire hazards, use electrical appliances safely and extinguish small fires through hands-on exercises. Your timely actions can stop a spark from turning into a blaze.

STAY WATER-WISE

As a nation surrounded by water, Singapore offers plenty of aquatic activities like swimming, kayaking and wakeboarding. But with these come risks, especially in open waters or crowded pools.

The Singapore Lifesaving Society (SLSS) offers training across three levels, covering essential water safety knowledge and rescue techniques. You’ll learn to spot signs of drowning, locate safety equipment like life rings and even perform water rescues. Those who wish to further their skills can achieve bronze certification, preparing them for greater challenges.

BUILD INNER STRENGTH

Practical skills are vital, but mental resilience is just as essential. Life’s challenges can be tough, and having psychological fortitude enables you to weather stress with poise.

Institutions like the Social Service Institute, Singapore Institute of Management and Singapore Management University offer programmes on mental well-being. From mindfulness techniques to self-care strategies, these sessions empower you to stay balanced during trying times. You’ll also learn to recognise when someone else is struggling and how to offer support, fostering a stronger emotional connection with those around you.

GUARD AGAINST ONLINE THREATS

The digital age has brought incredible convenience, but also risks like scams, phishing and identity theft. Cybercriminals are becoming more sophisticated, and it’s crucial to stay ahead of their tactics.

SkillfutureSG and the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) offer resources to keep you informed and protected. Learn how to identify phishing attempts, recognise red flags online, safeguard your online identity and avoid common traps. By adopting these measures, you can more confidently navigate the digital landscape and even help others avoid falling prey to cybercrime with your expertise.

MAKE SPACES SAFER

Home is where we feel most secure, but it’s also where many accidents occur — from kitchen burns to bathroom slips or improper food storage. With the right precautions, however, many of these mishaps can be avoided.

Organisations like the Institute of Technical Education and Learn For Life SG offer courses on home safety. Pick up tips on how to prevent electrical shocks, reinforce home safety and secure vulnerable areas such as windows and balconies. For households with children or elderly members, these precautions provide peace of mind and a safer environment for everyone.

READY FOR ANYTHING: NAVIGATING PUBLIC EMERGENCIES

Emergencies in public spaces can escalate in moments, but knowing how to respond can save lives and minimise chaos. At the SCDF’s Community Resilience Days, you’ll gain essential skills to handle such situations, empowering you to protect your loved ones and support your community in times of need.

On 15 and 16 February 2025, HomeTeamNS Bedok Reservoir will host a Total Defence Day event — FREE for all to attend. Gain hands-on experience in firefighting, build mental resilience and learn about current community watch schemes. Other exciting highlights include a smoke bubble show, a food station, and a special showcase of the SCDF Fire Bike and SPF Traffic Police Bike.

From 14 to 19 February 2025, HomeTeamNS Khatib will also be holding a SGSecure exhibition where you can learn how to respond to different threats. This event is open to public.

This year’s Total Defence exercise, Exercise SG Ready, returns with the theme “Are you ready for disruptions?” As a signature event of SG60 (Singapore’s 60th year of independence), the exercise runs from 15 to 28 February 2025, focusing on strengthening preparedness for power disruptions. The exercise will take place at various locations across Singapore.

Stay tuned for updates on the latest happenings via the official Total Defence website.

GX Fit: A Fresh Approach to Fitness for Active Agers

With customised activities and a supportive community, GX Fit encourages those aged 50 and above to stay active, healthy, and connected.

Staying active can feel challenging, especially as we age. Yet, maintaining fitness and mobility is key to physical and mental well-being.

Enter HomeTeamNS’ GX Fit, a programme tailored specifically for HomeTeamNS members aged 50 and above. GX Fit offers low-impact exercises and sports — such as rock climbing, fitness boxing, and airsoft target shooting — delivered in a supportive and fun-filled environment.

The programme encourages participants to step out of their comfort zones and embrace new activities, demonstrating that age is no barrier to trying something different. GX Fit not only promotes physical health but also fosters social connections, creating a vibrant and welcoming community.

To understand more about the programme, Frontline speaks with Muhammad Syahmi bin Azmi, a senior executive at HomeTeamNS Adventure HQ and a trainer for GX Fit rock climbing classes, and Richard Hue, a 64-year-old GX Fit participant who embodies the spirit of staying active.

Adventure HQ senior executive Muhammad Syahmi bin Azmi ensuring a participant’s harness and ropes are securely fastened before she takes on the rock wall.

ENCOURAGING PROGRESS AT EVERY STEP

“GX Fit focuses on accessible, safe activities that older adults may not have tried before,” explains Syahmi. As the coach for GX Fit’s rock climbing classes, he emphasises that the programme isn’t about physical strength alone. “The climbing programme highlights body mobility, flexibility, and coordination. Techniques are beginner-friendly and designed to improve balance, core strength, and range of motion, all of which are essential for maintaining overall well-being as we age.”

For Syahmi, the most fulfilling aspect of GX Fit lies in watching participants thrive, both physically and emotionally. The programme has even allowed active agers to bond with their loved ones in unexpected ways. “A grandfather in his late 50s brought his grandson to a session. They encouraged each other throughout, and by the end, both were so proud of what they had accomplished together,” recalls Syahmi “It was a moment that really highlighted how an active lifestyle can strengthen family bonds while promoting overall health.” Syahmi adds that such experiences show that GX Fit is also about creating memories and inspiring others to embrace an active lifestyle.

MORE THAN JUST EXERCISE

For Richard Hue, GX Fit’s thoughtful design made all the difference. The financial services consultant first heard about the programme through an online invitation. “The email caught my attention with its vibrant design and roster of free classes,” he says. “I tried the rock climbing class, and it exceeded my expectations. The climbing walls were really fun, with a variety of interesting routes to climb.”

Richard also tried fitness boxing, an activity he initially thought would be too intense for his age.

“With the instructor’s guidance, I learnt the importance of warming up and proper breathing,” he says. “It was tough but rewarding, and I look forward to trying it again.”

Beyond physical fitness, GX Fit fosters connection and camaraderie. Participants can bring along two non-member friends for free, turning exercise sessions into shared experiences.  “I invited two friends to join me, and we had a great time bonding over the climbs and workouts,” Richard says. “It’s a great way to stay active together while having fun.”

DISPELLING MYTHS ABOUT AGEING AND FITNESS

For some active agers, misconceptions about exercising can prevent them from starting a fitness routine. Common concerns include fears of injury and doubts about physical capability. “For instance, many people think rock climbing is all about upper body strength, but it’s more about flexibility and mobility,” Syahmi explains. “At GX Fit, we teach participants to use their legs and core, building strength gradually and safely.”

Safety is also a priority. “We provide proper guidance, quality equipment and a secure environment to ensure participants feel confident,” says Syahmi.

TIPS FOR ENJOYING GX FIT

Here are Syahmi’s suggestions for getting the most out of your GX Fit experience:

  • Dress comfortably: Wear clothes that allow for movement and closed-toe shoes with good grip.
  • Focus on learning: Don’t stress about getting it perfect. Take your time to learn the techniques. In rock climbing, for instance, Syahmi says, “Learn to position your body, use your legs to push up, and focus on balance and control. With time, this will make climbing feel much easier and more natural.”
  • Engage with others: Connect with fellow participants and encourage one another—it makes the experience more enjoyable.

Syahmi’s advice to those hesitant to join: “Exercise doesn’t have to be intense or painful. It’s about gradual improvement and discovering ways to enjoy staying active. GX Fit is designed specifically for older adults, so there’s no need to worry about keeping up with younger participants. Everyone moves at their own pace. The focus is on having fun while staying fit.”

Richard echoes this sentiment. “GX Fit has shown me that trying new things is possible at any age. I’ve even encouraged my friends to join in.”

As the GX Fit programme continues to grow, the goal is to welcome more into its vibrant community, where they can embrace the joys of an active lifestyle and forge meaningful connections. Let’s get moving!

5 Ways Singapore Police Force NSmen Keep Our City Safe

From patrolling neighbourhoods to managing large-scale security operations, SUPT (NS) Pow Choon Wee and his team at Woodlands Police Division play a crucial role in maintaining law and order.

After completing his 10-year National Service (NS) stint in 2020, SUPT (NS) Pow Choon Wee chose to continue serving under the Extension of Operationally Ready National Service Scheme — a decision driven by his deep appreciation for the NS experience that shaped him.

“NS made me who I am today,” he shares. “I enjoy meeting objectives and managing tasks like security deployments. My experiences from NS have had a profound impact on me, which makes me want to continue contributing back to the NS community.”

Now 36, Choon Wee serves as the (NS) Deputy Head of Operations at Woodlands Police Division. He works alongside a team of 15 NS Commanding Officers to manage the operational readiness of around 1,500 SPF NSmen in the Divisional Security Task Troops and NS Community Policing Unit. Here’s how he and his fellow Singapore Police Force (SPF) NSmen help keep our nation safe — both on the frontline and behind the scenes.

#1: PATROLLING THE STREETS AND RAISING AWARENESS

Police National Service (PNS) Officers keep the community safe and orderly through anti-crime patrols in public spaces such as shopping malls, helping to deter shop theft and other offences. They also conduct door-to-door visits in residential estates and migrant worker dormitories to share crime prevention tips on concerns like scams and unlicensed moneylending.

Choon Wee recalls how some migrant domestic workers were initially hesitant to speak with SPF officers. “But at the end of the conversation, they are thankful for the advice,” he says. “By showing that the police are here to advise them, we are engaging them on their safety and helping them to feel less foreign in our land.”

#2: PLANNING AND DEPLOYING FOR COMMUNITY EVENTS

From General Elections to festive celebrations, SPF NSmen provide essential support in areas such as crowd control, traffic management, and public safety. During the 2024 Woodgrove Estate Halloween Party – which drew an estimated 1,000 attendees – Choon Wee, and his team of NS Commanding Officers stepped it up a notch and took charge of security planning for the first time.

“Pre-ops planning involves multiple steps,” he explains. They include consulting SPF regular officers who were involved in previous deployments, conducting ground recces and walkthroughs, meeting up with community partners, developing detailed operations plans, and addressing the past year’s after-action review points.

Despite the steep learning curve, Choon Wee and his team successfully executed the deployment, with planning completed in about 2½ months. “Through meticulous preparation, collaboration with stakeholders, and iterative problem-solving, we mustered our courage to overcome the challenges,” he reflects. “This event marked a significant milestone in our growth as NS leaders and paved the way for us to take the lead in similar future events.”

#3: COLLABORATING WITH STAKEHOLDERS FOR SEAMLESS OPERATIONS

SPF NSmen frequently coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including other government agencies and security forces. At Jurong Police Division, where he previously served as an Inspector (NS), Choon Wee worked with Auxiliary Police Officers (APOs) from AETOS Security during the busy Qing Ming Festival, ensuring smooth traffic control along the main road outside Choa Chu Kang Cemetery.

“During such a collaboration, the ground IC for both SPF and AETOS will have a ‘handshake’ meet up,” he says. “This helps both agencies to stay aligned and reduce duplication of duties, which leads to optimised outcomes.” Choon Wee adds that since Qing Ming is an annual event, the camaraderie developed over the years between SPF and AETOS has fostered smoother communication and a more effective collaboration.

Similarly, when briefing his own team for large-scale deployments, Choon Wee applies lessons from his full-time job as a technology risk analyst in the financial industry. “The ability to simplify complex concepts into layman’s terms is very valuable,” he says. “It helps in briefing NS officers as we can digest the plan and break it down into actionable instructions.”

#4: STAYING IN TOP SHAPE TO PERFORM DUTIES

Operational readiness isn’t just about planning — it requires physical preparedness too. To stay fit and meet IPPT standards, Choon Wee finds time to exercise after his three children are asleep. “My wife and I will do vertical training for endurance,” he says. “We do five rounds of climbing the stairs from the first floor to the 15th floor, three times a week. A month or two before the IPPT, I will go on regular runs around the neighbourhood.”

Staying in shape and being operationally ready is essential, as SPF NSmen patrol dynamic environments where situations can escalate quickly. “Anything can happen, and we may encounter situations where we must use necessary force for public safety. We always have to expect the unexpected,” says Choon Wee.

#5: BALANCING NS COMMITMENTS WITH WORK AND FAMILY

Juggling NS responsibilities, a full-time career, part-time studies, and family life requires sacrifice and careful time management. “When I need to catch up on planning, I’ll try to take half an hour on the weekend at most and then cook something for my wife as a thank-you for being so understanding,” says Choon Wee. “And because there is a small element of risk when we get deployed, I also try to reassure her that I will come home safely from patrolling.”

Choon Wee highlights that the SPF operates round the clock to safeguard Singapore’s residents. “I’m thankful for my fellow NSmen as well as SPF regulars, who work tirelessly throughout the day and night shifts,” he says. “One thing I’d like to share with the public is that safety is not just in the hands of the SPF — it’s a shared community responsibility. Civilians play a critical role in crime prevention. By working together, we can build a safer society.”
