Capturing Life’s Big Moments and Small Wonders

Armed with his discerning lenses, INSP (NS) Mohamed Nazirul Mubin Bin Mohamed Yunos finds beauty in both distant landscapes and the everyday details close to home.

While many of us might walk past a hatching butterfly without noticing, INSP (NS) Mohamed Nazirul Mubin Bin Mohamed Yunos, 31, once spent an entire morning observing a pupa, checking it every five minutes as he waited for the butterfly to emerge.

His patience paid off. He photographed the butterfly’s delicate wings as they unfurled, showcasing stunning shades of orange and brown.

This dedication to macro photography is just one part of Nazirul’s passion for capturing life’s beauty, which began when he got his first camera phone at 13. Surrounded by family and friends who were avid photographers — some even professionals — he quickly developed his skills and spent years refining his craft.

CULTIVATING AN EYE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY

For Nazirul, a Senior Executive in Events and Marketing, passion and practice go hand in hand. “Consistent practice ultimately leads to improvement and mastery,” he shares.

His meticulous approach extends to how he prepares for each shoot. As a seasoned NSman — who served as an Assistant Operations Officer in the Central Division during his National Service in the Singapore Police Force and later as an Officer Commanding (OC) Troop at the Protective Security Command (ProCom) — Nazirul is always ready for the outdoors with his camera in tow. “I always bring tissues or a towel in my camera bag,” he says. “My face or hands can get sweaty or dirty, and keeping things dry ensures better control during the shoot.”

Nazirul also applies his organisational skills to his photography portfolio. This year, he hopes to curate a cohesive series with a clear narrative. “I’ve always liked how pictures can capture moments, memories, abstract ideas, and art,” he reflects.

His philosophy on photography? “There are no strict rules for what makes a good photo. As long as you enjoy the process, have fun and love what you do, that’s what matters most,” he says.

Nazirul shares with Frontline some of his most memorable photographs and the stories behind them, offering tips for aspiring photographers along the way.

LIME BUTTERFLY EMERGING ON KAFFIR LIME PLANT

“The butterfly completed all three stages of its life cycle — egg, caterpillar and pupa — right on my kaffir lime plant. Capturing this shot was relatively straightforward because butterflies usually stay still to dry their wings after emerging. However, the real challenge lay in predicting when it would eclose [emerge from its pupa].

When a butterfly ecloses, it has a brief window — usually 30 minutes or less — before taking its first flight, and this can happen at any time. To ensure I didn’t miss the moment, I prepared my camera in advance and checked on the pupa every five minutes. The ideal time to photograph the butterfly is when its wings are freshly eclosed and still wet, as the vibrant colours and contrasts are at their peak. In under five minutes, I captured as many shots as I could from various angles before it started moving and eventually took off.”

COMMON BLUEBOTTLE CATERPILLAR

“A macro lens is essential for photographing insects. It reveals incredible details — like the tiny hairs or thorns on their bodies — that are invisible to the naked eye.

Capturing this shot was particularly challenging due to the caterpillar’s constant movement and the low light conditions, which required using a camera flash and adaptable focus techniques. The caterpillar’s ability to camouflage on its host plant adds to the difficulty of locating it. To improve your chances, look for host plants in parks or less urbanised areas where leaves are less likely to be contaminated by fogging or insecticides. Additionally, understanding the active times and behaviour patterns of both butterflies and caterpillars is crucial for spotting them.”

MEXICAN SUNFLOWER, GROWN FROM SEED

“The best time to photograph flowers is when they’ve just bloomed and there’s good natural light. You can see that the upper side of the sunflower’s leaves exhibit a pattern reminiscent of an urban map.

As an avid gardener, I find great joy in watching plants grow and thrive under my care. When they flourish, it gives me a great sense of achievement. Most of my plants are grown in my home’s corridor. I like to keep plants that stand out in such spaces, like the double-petaled butterfly pea plant, blood flower, banana and variegated monstera, to name a few.”

SUNSET AT THE JETTY

“This photo was taken at a reservoir located about 5 kilometres from HomeTeamNS Khatib. I had just returned home in the evening and noticed that the setting sky had a beautiful orange glow, which is quite uncommon in Singapore. Knowing that the light would peak in about 20 minutes time, I rode as quickly as I could to the location. Though exhausted by the time I arrived, the scene was breathtaking. Armed only with my phone, I captured the moment and enjoyed the sunset.”

SULAWESI, INDONESIA

“My friends and I befriended a local who took us to this island on a traditional boat. We went snorkelling in near solitude, surrounded by untouched, pristine marine life and incredibly soft sand. However, I soon realised I was surrounded by reefs! As I carefully navigated my way back to shore, I paused, looked up and was greeted by this breathtaking view. The serenity of that moment was unparalleled, and I captured this photo to preserve and cherish the unforgettable experience.”

EVENING SKIES IN PENANG, MALAYSIA

“I had just enjoyed some of Penang’s amazing food and was on my way to a shopping mall (to use the toilet, haha). Initially, the view of the sky was blocked by Penang’s iconic alleys of shophouses. But as I crossed the final street, I came across this beautiful sunset and noticed a few others also posing and taking photos. That’s when I took out my phone and snapped the shot. What I love most about this photo is that it didn’t need any filter – that’s exactly how the sky looked!”

“That’s me, enjoying the sunrise and resting in the cold. My group of climbing kakis and I climb several mountains in the region every year, and this particular climb was part of our ongoing goal to conquer the Seven Summits of Indonesia. I find mountain climbing to be mentally, spiritually, and emotionally therapeutic, even as it challenges you physically.

We started with a two-day climb at Mt Latimojong followed by a night climb to catch the sunrise at Mt Bulusaraung. Unless you’re super fit and motivated, I wouldn’t recommend attempting what we did – even our guide team thought we were crazy! By the end of the trip, all of us were limping, and the pain lingered for some time.

But what makes these trips so fun is climbing with friends, meeting new people and conquering challenges together – it’s a truly rewarding experience. While photos can preserve those memories, nothing compares experiencing the moments with our own eyes.”

Be ready for anything: How to gain essential skills for everyday resilience

Equip yourself with the skills to make a life-changing difference in an emergency.

We often think we’re prepared — until the unexpected happens. While Singapore remains one of the safest nations in the world, we live in a time of increasing unpredictability. Emergencies, whether a medical crisis at home or a large-scale incident in public, can arise in an instant. Knowing how to respond can turn a life-altering crisis into a manageable situation.

The importance of readiness is highlighted every Total Defence Day, commemorated on 15 February. This date marks the surrender of British forces in Singapore to the Japanese in 1942 during World War II, serving as a stark reminder of the importance of staying vigilant and prepared.

Fortunately, essential life-saving skills are within reach for everyone and form a key part of Singapore’s Total Defence efforts. By equipping yourself with practical, life-saving techniques, you not only protect your loved ones but also help build a more resilient community. Across Singapore, programmes are available to teach these vital skills in just a short amount of time — a small investment that can have a lasting impact.

BE A LIFESAVER

Emergencies like cardiac arrest or accidents can happen anytime, anywhere — and every second counts. Being equipped with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and basic first aid skills can mean the difference between life and death.

You don’t need prior medical experience to start. Organisations like the Singapore Red Cross Academy and Singapore First Aid Training Centre (SFATC) welcome everyone. HomeTeamNS members can enjoy a 5% discount on all First Aid courses with SFATC.

These lessons teach you proper CPR techniques, how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and how to provide first aid for injuries like cuts and trauma. Beyond knowledge, these skills build your confidence to stay composed during critical moments, enabling you to be the calm, reliable presence others can depend on.

FIRE-PROOF YOUR HOME

Fires caused by personal mobility devices (PMDs) have been a growing concern. Additionally, more than half of the fires recorded in early 2023 were residential, often linked to unattended cooking or electrical faults, with some spreading to neighbouring units.

Thankfully, many of these incidents are preventable with proper knowledge and precautions. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) runs the Responders Plus Programme (RPP), which teaches you how to identify fire hazards, use electrical appliances safely and extinguish small fires through hands-on exercises. Your timely actions can stop a spark from turning into a blaze.

STAY WATER-WISE

As a nation surrounded by water, Singapore offers plenty of aquatic activities like swimming, kayaking and wakeboarding. But with these come risks, especially in open waters or crowded pools.

The Singapore Lifesaving Society (SLSS) offers training across three levels, covering essential water safety knowledge and rescue techniques. You’ll learn to spot signs of drowning, locate safety equipment like life rings and even perform water rescues. Those who wish to further their skills can achieve bronze certification, preparing them for greater challenges.

BUILD INNER STRENGTH

Practical skills are vital, but mental resilience is just as essential. Life’s challenges can be tough, and having psychological fortitude enables you to weather stress with poise.

Institutions like the Social Service Institute, Singapore Institute of Management and Singapore Management University offer programmes on mental well-being. From mindfulness techniques to self-care strategies, these sessions empower you to stay balanced during trying times. You’ll also learn to recognise when someone else is struggling and how to offer support, fostering a stronger emotional connection with those around you.

GUARD AGAINST ONLINE THREATS

The digital age has brought incredible convenience, but also risks like scams, phishing and identity theft. Cybercriminals are becoming more sophisticated, and it’s crucial to stay ahead of their tactics.

SkillfutureSG and the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) offer resources to keep you informed and protected. Learn how to identify phishing attempts, recognise red flags online, safeguard your online identity and avoid common traps. By adopting these measures, you can more confidently navigate the digital landscape and even help others avoid falling prey to cybercrime with your expertise.

MAKE SPACES SAFER

Home is where we feel most secure, but it’s also where many accidents occur — from kitchen burns to bathroom slips or improper food storage. With the right precautions, however, many of these mishaps can be avoided.

Organisations like the Institute of Technical Education and Learn For Life SG offer courses on home safety. Pick up tips on how to prevent electrical shocks, reinforce home safety and secure vulnerable areas such as windows and balconies. For households with children or elderly members, these precautions provide peace of mind and a safer environment for everyone.

READY FOR ANYTHING: NAVIGATING PUBLIC EMERGENCIES

Emergencies in public spaces can escalate in moments, but knowing how to respond can save lives and minimise chaos. At the SCDF’s Community Resilience Days, you’ll gain essential skills to handle such situations, empowering you to protect your loved ones and support your community in times of need.

On 15 and 16 February 2025, HomeTeamNS Bedok Reservoir will host a Total Defence Day event — FREE for all to attend. Gain hands-on experience in firefighting, build mental resilience and learn about current community watch schemes. Other exciting highlights include a smoke bubble show, a food station, and a special showcase of the SCDF Fire Bike and SPF Traffic Police Bike.

From 14 to 19 February 2025, HomeTeamNS Khatib will also be holding a SGSecure exhibition where you can learn how to respond to different threats. This event is open to public.

This year’s Total Defence exercise, Exercise SG Ready, returns with the theme “Are you ready for disruptions?” As a signature event of SG60 (Singapore’s 60th year of independence), the exercise runs from 15 to 28 February 2025, focusing on strengthening preparedness for power disruptions. The exercise will take place at various locations across Singapore.

Stay tuned for updates on the latest happenings via the official Total Defence website.

GX Fit: A Fresh Approach to Fitness for Active Agers

With customised activities and a supportive community, GX Fit encourages those aged 50 and above to stay active, healthy, and connected.

Staying active can feel challenging, especially as we age. Yet, maintaining fitness and mobility is key to physical and mental well-being.

Enter HomeTeamNS’ GX Fit, a programme tailored specifically for HomeTeamNS members aged 50 and above. GX Fit offers low-impact exercises and sports — such as rock climbing, fitness boxing, and airsoft target shooting — delivered in a supportive and fun-filled environment.

The programme encourages participants to step out of their comfort zones and embrace new activities, demonstrating that age is no barrier to trying something different. GX Fit not only promotes physical health but also fosters social connections, creating a vibrant and welcoming community.

To understand more about the programme, Frontline speaks with Muhammad Syahmi bin Azmi, a senior executive at HomeTeamNS Adventure HQ and a trainer for GX Fit rock climbing classes, and Richard Hue, a 64-year-old GX Fit participant who embodies the spirit of staying active.

Adventure HQ senior executive Muhammad Syahmi bin Azmi ensuring a participant’s harness and ropes are securely fastened before she takes on the rock wall.

ENCOURAGING PROGRESS AT EVERY STEP

“GX Fit focuses on accessible, safe activities that older adults may not have tried before,” explains Syahmi. As the coach for GX Fit’s rock climbing classes, he emphasises that the programme isn’t about physical strength alone. “The climbing programme highlights body mobility, flexibility, and coordination. Techniques are beginner-friendly and designed to improve balance, core strength, and range of motion, all of which are essential for maintaining overall well-being as we age.”

For Syahmi, the most fulfilling aspect of GX Fit lies in watching participants thrive, both physically and emotionally. The programme has even allowed active agers to bond with their loved ones in unexpected ways. “A grandfather in his late 50s brought his grandson to a session. They encouraged each other throughout, and by the end, both were so proud of what they had accomplished together,” recalls Syahmi “It was a moment that really highlighted how an active lifestyle can strengthen family bonds while promoting overall health.” Syahmi adds that such experiences show that GX Fit is also about creating memories and inspiring others to embrace an active lifestyle.

MORE THAN JUST EXERCISE

For Richard Hue, GX Fit’s thoughtful design made all the difference. The financial services consultant first heard about the programme through an online invitation. “The email caught my attention with its vibrant design and roster of free classes,” he says. “I tried the rock climbing class, and it exceeded my expectations. The climbing walls were really fun, with a variety of interesting routes to climb.”

Richard also tried fitness boxing, an activity he initially thought would be too intense for his age.

“With the instructor’s guidance, I learnt the importance of warming up and proper breathing,” he says. “It was tough but rewarding, and I look forward to trying it again.”

Beyond physical fitness, GX Fit fosters connection and camaraderie. Participants can bring along two non-member friends for free, turning exercise sessions into shared experiences.  “I invited two friends to join me, and we had a great time bonding over the climbs and workouts,” Richard says. “It’s a great way to stay active together while having fun.”

DISPELLING MYTHS ABOUT AGEING AND FITNESS

For some active agers, misconceptions about exercising can prevent them from starting a fitness routine. Common concerns include fears of injury and doubts about physical capability. “For instance, many people think rock climbing is all about upper body strength, but it’s more about flexibility and mobility,” Syahmi explains. “At GX Fit, we teach participants to use their legs and core, building strength gradually and safely.”

Safety is also a priority. “We provide proper guidance, quality equipment and a secure environment to ensure participants feel confident,” says Syahmi.

TIPS FOR ENJOYING GX FIT

Here are Syahmi’s suggestions for getting the most out of your GX Fit experience:

  • Dress comfortably: Wear clothes that allow for movement and closed-toe shoes with good grip.
  • Focus on learning: Don’t stress about getting it perfect. Take your time to learn the techniques. In rock climbing, for instance, Syahmi says, “Learn to position your body, use your legs to push up, and focus on balance and control. With time, this will make climbing feel much easier and more natural.”
  • Engage with others: Connect with fellow participants and encourage one another—it makes the experience more enjoyable.

Syahmi’s advice to those hesitant to join: “Exercise doesn’t have to be intense or painful. It’s about gradual improvement and discovering ways to enjoy staying active. GX Fit is designed specifically for older adults, so there’s no need to worry about keeping up with younger participants. Everyone moves at their own pace. The focus is on having fun while staying fit.”

Richard echoes this sentiment. “GX Fit has shown me that trying new things is possible at any age. I’ve even encouraged my friends to join in.”

As the GX Fit programme continues to grow, the goal is to welcome more into its vibrant community, where they can embrace the joys of an active lifestyle and forge meaningful connections. Let’s get moving!

Why not give it a try? Join GX Fit today and discover the joy of staying active with a community that cheers you on every step of the way!
