In sync: A National Serviceman’s passion for precision drills

LCP Tan Eng Kiat, Nasser in his SCDF uniform (left segment) and uniform for Precision Drill competitions (right segment). This image has been photoshopped to showcase two different uniforms worn by LCP Nasser.

Lance Corporal Tan Eng Kiat, Nasser’s belief in proficiency through practice has taken him from the National Cadet Corps to an international competition, reflecting his passion, discipline and resilience.

Currently serving his National Service as a Driver with the Corporate Services Hub (East) at HQ SCDF, Lance Corporal (LCP) Tan Eng Kiat, Nasser, has spent years honing his skills in precision drills. Since discovering his passion in 2016 as a cadet with the National Cadet Corps (NCC), he has been committed to perfecting this discipline.

Watching the national champion perform a series of stunts during an affirmation ceremony in his early NCC days sparked LCP Nasser’s interest in precision drills. “I was particularly attracted to the vast variety of stunts the performers executed,” he recalls. “It inspired me to learn precision drills as I progressed in NCC.”

That passion and dedication culminated in a defining moment in 2023. LCP Nasser joined The Street Elite, a US-based precision drills club, and represented Singapore at the World Drill Championships in the United States (US). This also marked his first in-person performance on an international stage. “We started by preparing suitable equipment such as our rifles, and spent countless hours planning and perfecting our routines,” he explains. Two weeks before the World Drill Championships, he travelled to the US to train with his team and mentor.

Upon arriving in Florida, his mentor organised practice sessions in neighbourhood parks to hone his drills and bolster his confidence in performing before an audience. “It was a proud moment for my family and friends,” he reflects. “Standing on a global stage to represent Singapore was exhilarating, yet humbling.”

A pivotal moment unfolded during the final round of the competition when his rifle slipped from his grasp and fell onto the ground. Despite this setback, his teammates and the audience cheered him on. “Their encouragements motivated me to pick up my rifle and finish the performance strongly,” he says. “This heartwarming show of support has stayed with me, inspiring me to continue practising and improving my drills.”

LCP Nasser was a proud member of the SCDF marching contingent at the National Day Parade 2024.

His training in precision drills also prepared him for his role in this year’s National Day Parade as part of the SCDF marching contingent. “Precision drill is not just about handling the rifle,” he explains. “The rifle can be seen as an extension of the user’s body, complemented by foot drills.”

LCP Nasser sees precision drills as both an art and a sport, requiring a blend of physical strength and artistic flow. “Every movement is the result of discipline and consistent effort in practising the drills ,” he explains. “As the rifle is not light, it requires strength to control every muscle and maintain my form. But precision drills can also be performed with elegance, flowing smoothly from one technique to another. I hope more people come to appreciate the dedication behind this discipline.”

Looking ahead, LCP Nasser is passionate about spreading the art of precision drills and hopes to mentor his juniors while training for future competitions.

For LCP Nasser, precision drills have become a way to connect with people from all walks of life. “Whether it’s building meaningful friendships with drill practitioners from around the world or learning techniques from one another, the shared passion and relationships formed make this hobby truly special.”

Hope in action: How this volunteer transforms lives through purpose

From helping ex-offenders reintegrate into society to championing drug abuse prevention, Mr Ramli Abdullah’s dedication shows that even small steps can spark big changes.

For Ramli Abdullah, 50, volunteering isn’t just an activity — it’s a way of life. By day, he earns a living as a private-hire vehicle driver, but his true passion lies in uplifting others and making a difference within Singapore’s community support landscape.

Through his agency, Reforming Support Group (RSG), he provides hope and guidance to ex-offenders and at-risk youths on their reintegration journeys. As a Desistor with the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) and an advocate for drug abuse prevention with agencies like the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), National Council Against Drug Abuse (NCADA), and the Dadah Itu Haram initiative, Ramli is committed to supporting those seeking a fresh start. Having recently marked 10 years of being drug-free, he draws on his personal journey to inspire resilience and positive change in others.

TURNING COMPASSION INTO STRENGTH

In a routine engagement with an ex-inmate last year, Ramli encountered a supervisee struggling with the challenges of reintegration. “He showed signs of giving up, saying there’s no hope for him to change and that he hasn’t been given the opportunity to redeem himself,” Ramli recalls. “It was very difficult to see someone feeling so defeated, especially when they were trying but not seeing progress.”

He focused on a few key actions to help the supervisee regain hope. “I started by listening actively, without judgment, to acknowledge their frustrations. Sometimes, just being heard can make all the difference,” he explains.

As a volunteer, Ramli understands that his role demands both empathy and persistence. Guiding individuals through their darkest moments can be emotionally taxing, but it’s also where his determination shines. After listening, he encourages them to see that every problem has a solution and reminds them to focus on the progress they’ve already made. “What matters is moving forward with determination. Every small step can lead to results if you keep going,” he adds.

This experience reinforced Ramli’s belief in the transformative power of hope and strengthened his resolve to never give up on anyone’s potential, no matter how daunting the journey may be. He says: “Volunteering has taught me that even in the most difficult situations, it’s possible to inspire resilience — not just in others, but in yourself.”

STAYING MOTIVATED THROUGH SETBACKS

On 20 September 2022, Ramli shared his insights during a discussion on the Danger of Drug Abuse and Success of Reformation Journey, as part of the #DadahItuHaram initiative.

Like any meaningful pursuit, volunteering has its challenges. Progress is often slow, and seeing supervisees struggle can be disheartening.

“I stay motivated by focusing on small, positive actions, such as setting micro-goals, breaking tasks into manageable steps and taking short mental breaks to reset when things feel overwhelming,” he explains. “Even when results take time to show, I remind myself that persistence will eventually pay off.”

This philosophy fuels Ramli’s commitment and optimism, showing how resilience and purpose can help overcome even the toughest obstacles.

A STRONG SUPPORT SYSTEM

Ramli credits much of his ability to persevere to his family — especially his wife, who has been his pillar of support. “She has always supported my passion for giving back,” he says. “Her encouragement and belief in me keep me going during challenging times. She understands the importance of what I do and celebrates my small achievements along the way.”

His family’s unwavering support has been a huge source of strength, enabling Ramli to continue his mission with confidence and determination.

REDEFINING SUCCESS, ONE STEP AT A TIME

Ramli (second row, checked shirt) with Minister of State, Ministry of Home Affairs & Ministry of National Development, Assoc Prof Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim (front row, white shirt), the officer in charge of inmates (back row, first from right) and inmates during the community-based programme organised under the #DadahItuHaram initiative.

Through his volunteer work, Ramli has gained a new understanding of what success truly means. “Success isn’t about grand milestones,” he reflects. “It’s about inspiring change — one small step at a time. Maintaining a positive mindset and taking meaningful actions not only helps others, but also enriches your own life.”

For him, fulfilment comes from knowing that his contributions, no matter how small, are part of a larger purpose.

To those considering volunteerism, Ramli offers this advice: “Be part of the Home Team Volunteer Network and discover the joy of giving back. You can make a real difference and play an important role in the community.”

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A VOLUNTEER

Ever wondered what it’s like to step into the shoes of someone who dedicates their time to giving back? Here’s a snapshot of Ramli’s routine on a volunteering day:

  • Morning: A new beginning
Ramli enjoys starting his day with a quiet walk to set a positive tone. “This helps me clear my mind and focus on what I wish to achieve today.”

  • Midday: Outreach and engagement
“My activities include preparing for meetings with ex-offenders, participating in awareness events, attending to requests or following up with those seeking help.”

  • Evening: Reflection and recharge
After a full day of giving back, Ramli winds down by reflecting on the day’s interactions. “No matter what happened earlier in the day, I always remind myself that every small effort can create ripples of change,” he says.

Teaming Up On and Off the Field

Discover how three SPF TransCom officers balance their football passion with teamwork on patrol, keeping the city safe while scoring goals in life.

Even though they have a shared love for football, Public Transport Security Command (TransCom) officers SC/SGT Jasdeen Mohamed, SC/SGT Rakim Shalla, and SC/CPL Muhammad Iskandar Bin Ishak often engage in “heated” exchanges. Their friendly rivalry is rooted in their support for different English Premier League (EPL) clubs — Jasdeen, 21, is a passionate Liverpool fan, while Rakim, 20, and Iskandar, 22, are die-hard supporters of Manchester United. “What makes it fun is that both teams are rivals,” said Rakim. “Both Iskandar and Jasdeen constantly debate over which team is playing better during EPL matches.”

Despite their banter, the trio agrees that Lionel Messi is among the greatest players of all time. The officers play football together at least once a fortnight, either at Woodlands Base or HomeTeamNS Bukit Batok’s Futsal Court, which is close to all their homes.

TAKING TEAMWORK TO THE NEXT LEVEL

When the three play football, they push each other to be better players by pointing out areas for improvement. Their ability to communicate and put the team’s needs above their own has strengthened their bond both on and off the field. This camaraderie has translated into their work as TransCom officers, where clear communication and teamwork are crucial.

“When we respond to incidents, we naturally assign ourselves roles in order to make things more efficient and to help settle the issue as quickly as possible. For instance, if I was approached by a member of the public who doesn’t speak English or Malay, Rakim or Jasdeen would step in, as they can converse in Mandarin and Tamil respectively,” explained Iskandar.

As TransCom officers and foot patrol leaders, their primary duty is to ensure the safety of Singapore’s public transport network by patrolling MRT stations. They respond to various cases, from locating missing persons and handling shop thefts and disputes to rendering medical assistance. They are also deployed at major events such as Formula 1 and the National Day Parade, as well as during festive celebrations like Christmas and New Year’s Day.

“We respond to various types of cases daily. It’s our duty to protect the public transport and deter crime,” said Jasdeen.

“Leading a team and responding to incidents can be demanding. But when we receive appreciation from the public or help restore peace, it’s incredibly fulfilling,” said Rakim. He added that “It’s also rewarding to share knowledge with my juniors and witness how they improve over time.”

(From left to right) SC/SGT Rakim Shalla, SC/SGT Jasdeen Mohamed, and SC/CPL Muhammad Iskandar Bin Ishak during their patrols.

PROVIDING MENTORSHIP AND SUPPORT

TransCom is a specialist unit in the Singapore Police Force (SPF) that relies heavily on NSFs. Building strong bonds between juniors and seniors is essential for the unit to function smoothly. Jasdeen highlighted the importance of mentorship in ensuring new officers are prepared for their duties. “Mentors help new officers gain confidence and understand their responsibilities,” said Jasdeen. He credits his teammates, Rakim and Iskandar, for helping him learn the ropes and gain essential knowledge during his early days in the unit.

One notable incident that tested their teamwork was the train disruption on the East West Line that happened on 25 September 2024. Stationed at Jurong East MRT, the trio coordinated their teams to manage crowd control and provide directions to stranded commuters. “The three of us coordinated and decided to split ourselves up at the platforms and concourse level so as to cover a wider area,” recalled Jasdeen. “We projected our voices to raise awareness of the bridging bus locations and the possible routes that the public could take to reach their destinations. I’m glad I was able to help during this major disruption with Rakim and Iskandar,” added Jasdeen.

FORGING UNITY THROUGH COHESION

Throughout their NS journey, cohesion and other significant activities that TransCom organises help to foster a sense of camaraderie among the trio which extends to their fellow officers. “We participated in a cohesive 4km run at Bedok Reservoir and also exercise sessions after in-service training. I have fun exercising and running together as a team as I get to see another side of them and engage in meaningful conversations,” Jasdeen recounted. “Another highlight was the TransCom Appreciation Night. It showed me a non-operational perspective of the people I work with, and I was able to engage in casual conversations with my team and strengthen bonds with them simultaneously,” he added.

STRENGTHENING THEIR CAPABILITIES TOGETHER

The trio’s teamwork isn’t limited to football; they also hit the gym together, where they motivate one another to push through challenging workouts. “Going to the gym builds trust and empathy,” said Iskandar. “We encourage each other and offer advice on how to improve. Fitness is crucial in our job, especially when assisting someone with a medical emergency,” he added.

Their dedication has paid off. Thanks to the workouts and the continued encouragement of Jasdeen and Rakim, Iskandar was recognised with the Commander’s Award for best improvement in IPPT for his intake. He was also part of the TransCom team that won a gold medal during a recent Police Sports Association football tournament. “The biggest lesson I’ve learned from TransCom is how to be the best version of myself and a leader my team can rely on,” said Iskandar.

Rakim and Jasdeen have also received recognition for their leadership. Rakim was presented with the Outstanding Performance Award, while Jasdeen, who was named the Best Trainee in the 190th intake during the TransCom Basic Course, received the Outstanding PNSF Award for his intake in October 2024.

(From left to right) SC/CPL Muhammad Iskandar Bin Ishak, SC/SGT Jasdeen Mohamed, and SC/SGT Rakim Shalla at TransCom Woodlands Base.

A BOND THAT TRANSCENDS WORK

While formal recognition is rewarding, the trio’s respect and admiration for one another is perhaps the greatest accolade. “Rakim and Jasdeen are both disciplined officers who give their best no matter the circumstances,” said Iskandar.

“Rakim is a dedicated and motivated officer who can command the team, delegate roles, and write a good First Information Report!” said Jasdeen. “Meanwhile, Iskandar is a confident leader and good with public engagement. He often encourages the public to sign up as Riders on Watch (ROW) under the Community Watch Scheme (CWS),” Jasdeen added.

Did You Know?

The ROW network was launched in 2019 with the aim of preventing crime within the public land transport network. Commuters are roped in as ‘eyes and ears’ on the ground during their daily commute, as an extension to the Singapore Police Force’s overall strategy in combating crime and terrorism. ROW has subsumed as an interest group under the Community Watch Scheme and has more than 8,000 members. Sign up for the ROW here and let’s all pitch in to build a stronger, safer community for all.

Reflecting on their shared journey, Rakim said, “The memories we’ve created at the football field and on patrol will always be cherished. I’m certain we’ll stay in touch and continue to hang out even after our NS journey ends.”
