Perfection under pressure: Marching in the National Day Parade

SGT Mohamed Firdose found pride and motivation as he stepped into the nation’s spotlight at the National Day Parade.

Growing up, the rhythmic drumbeats, vibrant colours and clockwork precision of the marching contingents were Firdose’s favourite parts of the National Day Parade (NDP).

“The march-past by the contingents, the state flag fly-past, the salute to the nation and the Guard of Honour — all these elements came together to create a powerful display of national pride, military strength and community spirit,” recalls Firdose fondly. He adds that the 2015 NDP, which marked Singapore’s 50th year of independence, was especially memorable with its elaborate displays and celebrations.

This year, the 24-year-old full-time national serviceman — who serves as a Navigation Specialist with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) Marine Division — had the chance to be part of the event that captivated his childhood imagination: Marching in the NDP as a member of the SCDF contingent.

For Firdose, participating in the parade was an opportunity for him and his fellow SCDF officers to showcase their hard work and be a part of the grand celebration. “The sense of pride and connections that we made with the audience and fellow participants were incredibly rewarding,” he shares.

THE PUSH TO BE PITCH-PERFECT

Firdose’s primary role in the SCDF — navigating and responding to emergencies at sea is no walk in the park, as the maritime environment is highly dynamic. Rehearsing for the NDP presented its own set of challenges, involving long hours of drills under the sun, in which the same drills were repeated numerous times to ensure flawless execution under pressure.

“Rehearsals for the NDP were intense and demanding, with numerous practices to ensure that everything ran smoothly. I found the experience to be both challenging and exhilarating,” he explains.

The sweltering heat during training was not to be taken lightly. As the organiser, the SAF used water-spraying cans to cool the participants down and scheduled frequent water breaks. The weather conditions also tested the participants’ adaptability. “Many people might not know that we often had to deal with unpredictable weather during rehearsals, which may require changes to original plans,” Firdose shares.

Despite the tough rehearsals, Firdose found joy in the camaraderie and positive spirit among the participants. As the rehearsals and National Education shows progressed, his sense of excitement and anticipation grew. “I was naturally excited, as it is an honour to represent the SCDF and Singapore in such a significant event. At the same time, I felt tense due to the high expectations and the desire to perform flawlessly,” Firdose elaborates.

On National Day itself, Firdose was able to cast aside the nervousness and fully embrace the moment. “As we marched out and saw the crowd, we knew that the nation was watching. The feeling of pride was overwhelming,” he recalls. “I will always remember the instant when we marched past the grandstand and heard the crowd’s cheers. The sense of national unity and joy in that moment was indescribable.”

Firdose adds, “Seeing everyone come together to celebrate this special moment made all the hard work and long hours of rehearsals worthwhile. It was a powerful reminder that everyone plays an important part for our nation.”

AN EXPERIENCE TO REMEMBER

The exhilaration of marching in the NDP may be behind him for now, but Firdose continues to draw on the experience for inspiration and motivation. “Participating in the NDP taught me a lot about discipline, teamwork and the importance of small details,” he says, noting that one key lesson was the importance of precision and timing, which he relates well to his SCDF duties.

“Whether it’s coordinating with a team during an emergency or ensuring that equipment is in perfect working order, the attention to detail and teamwork emphasised during the NDP training have been invaluable,” he adds.

On a personal level, he credits the experience with developing his resilience and ability to stay calm under pressure — while also deepening his sense of national pride. “It’s a reminder that our daily duties in the SCDF are part of a larger mission to keep the nation safe,” he says. “It also made me realise how our roles contribute to the greater good. This has strengthened my commitment to my daily duties in SCDF.”

Reflecting on his NDP journey, Firdose has some valuable advice for future participants: “Hydration and rest are key — don’t underestimate how physically demanding the rehearsals can be. Stay focused and take each rehearsal seriously, but also remember to enjoy the process. It’s a unique experience that not everyone gets to be a part of, so take pride in your role and support your teammates.”

SOAK IN THE THERMAL GOODNESS

Once part of a larger area with a bottling factory, the park now features rustic foot baths with naturally heated waters to soothe tired muscles. Bring eggs to boil in the mineral-rich water and savour a moment to rejuvenate your senses. Afterwards, take a leisurely stroll along Floral Walk and stop in at the nearby cafe for tea and snacks.

The park is open from 7am to 7pm, and entry is free.

ENJOY GIVING BACK TO THE SOCIETY

Volunteering provides a meaningful way to contribute to your community and make a difference in the lives of others.

Consider volunteering at a soup kitchen like Willing Hearts, where you can be part of the crew that helps prepare, cook and pack hot meals, or sign up as a delivery driver to bring the meals to those in need. Discover the Charms of Bedok Reservoir

From an exhilarating treetop walk to top-notch facilities at a waterfront-facing HomeTeamNS clubhouse, find out why Bedok Reservoir is the perfect spot to explore and unwind.

As one of Singapore’s oldest neighbourhoods, Bedok stands out for its dynamic community vibe and comprehensive amenities. The area buzzes with life, bolstered by bustling shopping centres and excellent connectivity through its MRT and bus networks. It is also home to bustling hawker centres that serve up a delectable array of dishes — from the crisp, golden pratas and rich curry chicken noodles to the sublime chwee kueh.

Historically cherished for its beachside charm before land reclamation altered its geography, Bedok’s landscape has undergone significant transformations, moving the coastline from Marine Parade Road to its present position. However, Bedok makes up for its lost seaside attraction with a hidden gem: Bedok Reservoir.

Though often eclipsed by the popular lakes of Seletar and MacRitchie, Bedok Reservoir stands out with its own unique charm that invites discovery. Packed with recreational opportunities and scenic vistas, it’s a destination truly worth exploring.

Here are some notable facts about Bedok Reservoir and compelling reasons to visit.

It was not always a large lake

Surprise — Bedok Reservoir was once completely dry and a sand quarry. When it was part of Tampines, the area was bustling with quarrying activities that supported urban development. However, these operations led to significant environmental concerns, including pollution and dust. In response, stricter regulations were introduced in 1981. By 1991, all quarries were shut down, with the exception of a disused one at Tampines Avenue 10, which eventually became Bedok Reservoir.

It is easily accessible

The Bedok Reservoir MRT station, which opened in 2017 on the Downtown Line, offers direct connections from the Central Business District to Bedok Reservoir. Additionally, cycling enthusiasts can reach the area via the Eastern Coastal Loop of the Park Connector Network from Marina Bay, East Coast Park, and even Changi Airport.

It is a fantastic photo spot

Located on the south of the lake near to Reservoir Village, the floating deck is a scenic spot for some great photos. Built as a loop, it extends out across the water for an unblocked view of the scenery. Complete with benches, it’s the ideal spot to relax and immerse yourself in the serene surroundings.

It has a wild and melodic side

Bedok Reservoir is not only a sanctuary for a variety of wildlife — including cute squirrels, the celebrated otters, and the majestic White-bellied Sea Eagle — but also a haven of natural harmony. On weekend mornings — the Bird Singing Area near the floating deck becomes a concert of natural sounds. Here, enthusiasts display their cherished songbirds, creating a delightful symphony of chirps that enhance the tranquil atmosphere.

It is a favourite haunt for joggers

Bedok Reservoir, encircled by lush greenery and serene waters, offers a perfect environment for both casual joggers and seasoned runners. The path is well-maintained, ensuring each lap is as rejuvenating as it is invigorating.

Aiming to set a new personal best? Sign up for the upcoming HomeTeamNS Real Run and train at one of Singapore’s most scenic spots. Hurry, limited slots are left!

You can cast a line and relax

Anglers will find a hidden gem in Bedok Reservoir’s approved fishing deck at the southwest tip, near Carpark A. While it may be an underrated fishing spot, those in the know have long enjoyed its serene greenery and the thrill of catching peacock bass. The spacious floating deck provides ample space for everyone to cast their lines comfortably. So, pack a stool and some refreshments, and settle in for a peaceful day of fishing.

There is an exciting treetop walk

Embark on an exhilarating treetop adventure at Bedok Reservoir with the Forest Adventures obstacle course. This unique aerial playground offers three levels of difficulty to cater to adventurers of all ages — from a course for children enhancing their confidence and motor skills to the exhilarating 300-metre-long zipline that soars over the water for the more daring.

It is home to the HomeTeamNS Bedok Reservoir clubhouse, a hub for premier facilities

At the HomeTeamNS Bedok Reservoir clubhouse, you will discover a plethora of top-tier amenities ready to meet any need. These include large activity zones like multi-level obstacle course Action Motion for gamified entertainment and Aqua Adventure, an exhilarating indoor water adventure centre. If relaxation is on your agenda, unwind by the infinity pool with views over the reservoir, or consider a staycation at one of the cosy waterfront villas at East Villa. For dining, the clubhouse offers options ranging from kaya toast and hotpots to burgers and ayam penyet, all at member-discounted prices.
